#15 - Fuck competitions, here's some scholarships
Especially focused at supporting underrepresented designers.
ABOLISH paid for competitions. I said what I said. Think of who REALLY benefits from the hefty entry fees required (Check pentawards if you want to have a laugh)!
Now that we got that out the way, here’s some links to scholarships and grants to keep an eye on!
Gerard Unger Scholarship
The annual Gerard Unger Scholarship helps promising typeface design students develop their careers right away. They encourage all students enrolled in or graduating from a typography course to submit their unique typeface design projects
The selected designer will receive € 5.000 total paid out in monthly deposits in exchange for participating in the internship to develop their typeface within TypeTogether’s structure. Additionally, the selected designer will receive funding (up to € 1.000) for an educational trip to attend to an agreed top-level typography conference.

TDC
TDC is not my fave, and you can imagine why: they host competitions charging entry fees.
But let’s give credit when it’s due, TDC also offers three scholarships: The Ezhishin Scholarship for Native American and First Nation Students in the US and Canada, the Adé Hogue Scholarship for BIPOC Students in Junior Year of Undergrad or 1st Year Graduate/Post-Graduate and the Beatrice Warde Scholarship for Women in Junior Year of Undergraduate Program.
Award
The selected designer will receive $5,000 toward project or tuition expenses. They will also get a One-year TDC membership.
The MALEE Scholarship
Women have long played an important role in type design and continue to make significant artistic and intellectual contributions to the field. Yet there is still a lack of cultural, ethnic, and gender diversity in our global industry. By actively seeking, supporting, and sustaining emerging talent far and wide, the type design industry can commit to becoming a community that is more equitable and vibrant.
The Malee Scholarship was established in 2019 and funded by Sharp Type Co. with a mission to advance and empower women who are part of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in the type design field. This partnership provides financial assistance, creative mentorship, and professional guidance to support a new generation of designers who will undoubtedly enrich the type design world with new ideas.
Award
The Malee Scholarship grants $6,000 USD annually to one woman of color over 16 years of age. The annual recipient will also take part in a mentorship program with the Sharp Type team, who will provide professional & creative guidance with the production of their typeface. If the recipient requires a RoboFont license, one will be generously donated by the RoboFont team.
Type Electives
Type Electives offers different levels of tuition cover for students. This scholarship is open to all Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, with priority given to those who have limited resources or access to educational opportunities. They accept applications from all locations, both within the U.S. and internationally.
